CS2 launch options: what still works in 2026
By Austin Copeland, founder of Hypertune · Last updated: 25 October 2026 Austin founded Hypertune in 2022, and Hypertune's technicians check every CS2 setting on this page. [Austin to confirm the author line]
The best CS2 launch options for most players are one option or none: +fps_max 0 if you play with G-Sync off, and an empty box if you use G-Sync. Most options in older lists come from CS:GO and do nothing in Counter-Strike 2. Launch options give little FPS by themselves; the CS2 pro settings page has the settings that matter.
The short version
- In Steam, open your Library, right-click Counter-Strike 2, then choose Properties > General > Launch Options.
- Delete CS:GO leftovers such as
-tickrate 128,-novid,-nojoy,-refresh,-d3d9exand+exec autoexec.cfg. - Add
+fps_max 0if G-Sync is off. With G-Sync on, leave the box empty. - Add
-allow_third_party_softwareonly while a recording or overlay tool needs it. - Close the window. CS2 reads the options the next time it starts.
- For real FPS, use the video, Windows and NVIDIA settings on the CS2 pro settings page.
Before you start
Setting CS2 launch options takes two minutes and needs only Steam. To undo any change, clear the Launch Options box, so no restore point is needed. Copy what is in the box now into a note first.
How to set CS2 launch options in Steam
To set CS2 launch options, open your Steam Library, right-click Counter-Strike 2 and choose Properties. On the General tab, type your options in the Launch Options box with a space between each one, then close the window. CS2 reads the box every time it starts until you clear it.
Entries with a dash, such as -sw, are launch options; entries with a plus, such as +fps_max 0, are console commands Steam passes to CS2 at start.

Best CS2 launch options in 2026: the short set
The best CS2 launch options in 2026 are a short set: +fps_max 0 for players with G-Sync off, and nothing else unless a tool or a problem calls for it. This matches the CS2 pro settings page, whose settings Hypertune's technicians approved on 22 October 2026.
Layout: code field with a copy button.
+fps_max 0
+fps_max 0 sets Maximum FPS In Game to unlimited each time CS2 starts, the lowest-delay setup with G-Sync off. CS2 already saves this value, so the option keeps the cap in place rather than adding frames.
With G-Sync on, leave +fps_max out and set the cap in Settings > Video > Advanced Video > Maximum FPS In Game, using the G-Sync cap table on the CS2 pro settings page. A +fps_max 0 in the box sets the cap back to unlimited at every start. [to confirm with technician]
-allow_third_party_software belongs in the box only while a tool such as OBS Game Capture needs to hook into CS2 (see the Trust Factor section below).
CS2 launch options for FPS: what works and what to delete
Most CS2 launch options for FPS in older guides are CS:GO leftovers. Counter-Strike 2 runs on the Source 2 engine with DirectX 11 or Vulkan and tick-rate-independent gameplay, so flags built for CS:GO's engine do nothing. A few still work but add little. This table gives each option's CS2 behaviour as of October 2026.
Layout: HTML table, rows stack into cards on mobile.
| Option | What it does in CS2 | Use it? |
|---|---|---|
+fps_max 0 |
Sets Maximum FPS In Game to unlimited at start. A console command; CS2 saves the value anyway | Yes, with G-Sync off |
-allow_third_party_software |
Turns off Trusted Mode so tools like OBS Game Capture can hook into CS2. VAC stays on | Only while a tool needs it |
-high |
Works. Sets cs2.exe to High process priority; one published test measured a small gain | Leave it out |
-threads |
Works, but sets CS2's engine thread pool to your number minus one. CS2 already picks physical cores minus one | Leave it out |
-vulkan |
Works. Switches CS2 from DirectX 11 to Vulkan; the first launch rebuilds shaders. Slower on NVIDIA cards in two recent tests | Intel Arc owners can test it; everyone else stays on DirectX 11 |
-fullscreen |
Works. Starts CS2 in fullscreen even when the menu says windowed | Set Display mode in the video menu instead |
-console |
No longer opens the console at start [to confirm with technician: whether it still switches the console setting on] | Use Settings > Game > Enable Developer Console (~) |
-noreflex |
Works. Removes NVIDIA Reflex from the video menu | Leave it out; the CS2 page keeps Reflex on |
-mainthreadpriority 2 |
Recommended by one 2026 guide as a main-thread priority boost [to confirm with technician] | Wait for the technicians' check |
-tickrate 128 |
Nothing. CS2 uses sub-tick updates instead of a fixed tickrate | Delete |
-novid |
Nothing. CS2 has no intro video to skip | Delete |
-nojoy |
Nothing. Since Valve's 29 May 2024 update, CS2 ignores joysticks by default | Delete |
-refresh / -freq |
Nothing. CS2 starts at the refresh rate set in Windows [to confirm with technician] | Delete; set the refresh rate in Windows |
-d3d9ex |
Nothing. CS2 has no DirectX 9 renderer | Delete |
+exec autoexec.cfg |
Runs your autoexec a second time. CS2 runs autoexec.cfg from its cfg folder at every start by itself | Delete |
Why -high and -threads stay out
-high raises CS2's process priority and still works, but the gain in published tests is small, and the Windows steps on the CS2 pro settings page give CS2 the processor time it needs. -threads with "cores plus one" adds a single worker thread, because CS2 already sizes its thread pool to your processor.
CS:GO launch options that do nothing in CS2
CS:GO launch options such as -tickrate 128, -novid, -nojoy, -refresh, -d3d9ex and -limitvsconst controlled systems that Counter-Strike 2 replaced. Delete them: a shorter box makes a real problem easier to find. CS:GO console commands such as +cl_forcepreload 1 and +mat_queue_mode 2 no longer exist in CS2.
Do CS2 launch options increase FPS?
CS2 launch options give little FPS by themselves. The options that still work change how CS2 starts, not how fast it renders. Valve developer John McDonald said of CS:GO in 2018: "Best launch options are no launch options. They are the most heavily tested by the dev team."
The FPS you can gain sits in the video, Windows and NVIDIA settings on the CS2 pro settings page, including its CS2 FPS boost section. For hitches and frame drops, see the CS2 stuttering guide. [link: CS2 stuttering guide, /fix/cs2-stuttering, when it is live (N1 row 17)]
Set up an autoexec in CS2 (optional)
An autoexec.cfg file in CS2's cfg folder runs every time CS2 starts, with no launch option needed, and keeps binds and crosshair commands the same after updates.
- Open
Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\game\csgo\cfg. - Create a text file named
autoexec.cfg. Turn on file name extensions in File Explorer so it does not end up asautoexec.cfg.txt. - Add one console command per line, then save.
- To check it runs, put
echo "autoexec loaded"on the first line, start CS2 once with-devin the launch box, and look for that line in the console. Remove-devafterwards.
Screenshot needed: our own File Explorer screenshot of the
game\csgo\cfgfolder withautoexec.cfgand file name extensions on. File:cs2-autoexec-cfg-folder.webp. Alt text: "CS2 cfg folder in File Explorer with autoexec.cfg"
Situational CS2 launch options
These CS2 launch options each solve one problem. Remove them once it is solved.
Are CS2 launch options VAC-safe?
CS2 launch options are a Steam feature, set in Steam's own Properties window and documented by Valve, so using them is VAC-safe. [to confirm with technician] -allow_third_party_software needs care: it turns off Trusted Mode, and Valve says your Trust Factor "may be negatively affected" outside Trusted Mode. Keep it out of the box unless a tool requires it; OBS Display Capture and Window Capture work in Trusted Mode without it. -insecure turns VAC off and blocks matchmaking until you remove it.
CS2 resolution launch options and troubleshooting
-sw -w 1280 -h 720 starts CS2 in a 1280 × 720 window, which helps when it opens to a black screen or on the wrong monitor. Then set your normal resolution, including 1280 × 960 stretched, in the video menu. -dx11 returns CS2 to its default renderer after a crash with -vulkan. Since the 30 September 2026 CS2 update, crashz' Crosshair Generator map needs -disable_workshop_command_filtering; remove it when you are done.
Let Hypertune do it
Launch options are free and take two minutes. Hypertune works on what they cannot reach: CPU Overclocking, GPU Overclocking, Windows Debloating, Network Optimizations, Memory Optimizations and Game Hub, applying only the features you turn on. Hypertune stress-tests every overclock on your hardware and skips it if your cooling cannot hold it, creates a Windows restore point automatically, and reverts from the Restore tab. [Austin to confirm: whether the Counter-Strike 2 Game Hub profile sets any launch options]
Game Hub profiles change in-game settings through each game's config files, which is the only way to change them, and that is all they change. Hypertune makes no unsafe changes.
Screenshot needed: Hypertune's own screenshot of Game Hub with the Counter-Strike 2 profile on (the same capture as the CS2 page). File:
hypertune-game-hub-cs2.webp. Alt text: "Hypertune Game Hub with the Counter-Strike 2 profile turned on"
Up to 60% higher FPS; results vary by hardware and game. See how Hypertune works · Is Hypertune safe?

CS2 launch options FAQ
Layout: accordion. Each question is an H3. No FAQ schema (C29).
Do launch options increase FPS in CS2?
No. The CS2 launch options that still work change how the game starts, not how fast it renders. The video, Windows and NVIDIA settings on the CS2 pro settings page are where the FPS is.
Does -tickrate 128 work in CS2?
No. CS2 uses sub-tick updates and tick-rate-independent gameplay, so -tickrate 128 does nothing in matchmaking or on a local server. Delete it from the box.
Should I set -threads to my core count plus one?
No. CS2 sets its own thread pool to your physical cores minus one, so -threads 9 on an 8-core processor adds one worker thread and no FPS. Leave it out.
How do I reset CS2 launch options?
In Steam, right-click Counter-Strike 2, choose Properties > General, clear the Launch Options box and close the window. CS2 then starts with its defaults.
End of page copy.

Handover note for Hoa
Hoa, this is ready for your hand check. Please read it against the approved CS2 page as well as V8, because this guide is the launch options block of that page written out in full.
Open tags (8):
- [Austin to confirm the /guides/ pattern] for the URL.
- [Austin to confirm the author line]: Austin as named author (V8 rule 9). The "why he knows" line uses only the founding year and the technicians' check.

-mainthreadpriority 2(one source only). - [to confirm with technician]:
-refreshand-freqdo nothing (one tested source). - [to confirm with technician]: launch options are VAC-safe (Valve has no explicit line).
Plus one date check, [confirm the current CS2 patch on publish day], and three link placeholders: CS2 stuttering guide, buyer page, and the CS2 page anchors once the page is built.
Things for Travis to look at, beyond the tags:
- The CS2 page says "No launch option boosts FPS" and calls
-highand-threadsCS:GO leftovers. csbepro's October 2026 test shows both still do something, and-highgave a small gain on one laptop. This guide says launch options give "little FPS" and that both "work, but leave them out", which agrees with the CS2 page's advice. If Travis wants the two pages word for word, the CS2 page line could become "No launch option meaningfully boosts FPS". -novid: two sources say CS2 has no intro video; FPSHeaven says it skips an intro animation. The page says it does nothing.- The John McDonald quote names a Valve developer and dates it to CS:GO in 2018. Please confirm Austin is happy to name him (he is not a pro, streamer or creator, so the V8 name rule does not cover him).
- NVIDIA appears only as setting names (NVIDIA Reflex, NVIDIA driver settings) and test hardware notes, as on the CS2 page. No partner wording. Intel appears once, as "Intel Arc owners can test" Vulkan.
What I did not do: no browser check of People Also Ask, no screenshots, no Search Console pull, nothing posted or sent, no tracker changes.
